What the commission does
The Courthouse Square Historic District covers the blocks facing the Brisket County Courthouse (1911). Before you change the outside of a building in the district, you need a Certificate of Appropriateness. The commission reviews applications for:
- Storefront, window and door replacements
- Awnings, canopies and signs
- Exterior paint colors (the commission keeps an approved palette at City Hall)
- Demolition or relocation of any building in the district
The commission meets only when an application is pending. Submit your application to Planning & Development at least 21 days before the meeting date.
The commission has no authority over the courthouse itself, which belongs to Brisket County. It is consulted whenever anyone proposes setting the courthouse clock to the correct time. The clock runs four minutes fast on purpose, and the commission has recommended, three times, that it continue to.
