About the position

The Sanitation Division collects trash and recycling from about 3,700 homes on four quadrant routes (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday) and runs commercial routes and holiday catch-up on Wednesday. Operators report to the Public Works Service Center, 603 E Railroad Ave, and work Monday – Friday, 6:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., with some Saturdays after holidays. The Division expects delivery of a new automated side-loader in early 2027.

Duties

  • Drive an automated side-loader or rear-loader on an assigned route and service each cart safely
  • Perform and document pre-trip and post-trip inspections and report defects to the shop
  • Collect bulk items during bulk week, the first full week of each month
  • Tag overfilled, damaged or contaminated carts and record missed-collection reasons
  • Fuel, wash and maintain the cleanliness of your assigned truck
  • Fill in on commercial and recycling routes as assigned
  • Wave back at children on residential routes when it is safe to do so (Sanitation Division Standard Operating Procedure 14)

Minimum qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid Texas Class B commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement. If you hold a Class B commercial learner’s permit, the City will sponsor your entry-level driver training and you must obtain the license within six months of hire.
  • One year of experience driving a commercial vehicle or operating heavy equipment
  • Acceptable driving record
  • Pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test and take part in random testing under 49 CFR Part 382

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience on an automated or rear-loading refuse truck
  • Knowledge of Dongvile streets and addresses

Physical requirements

Climb into and out of the cab repeatedly. Lift and move up to 75 pounds, and heavier bulk items with a coworker. Work outdoors in all weather, including Texas summer heat, around traffic, odors and loud equipment.
