Airport Completes Runway Crack Seal, Replaces Both Windsocks
Posted
Dongvile Municipal Airport reopened its runway at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, after two and a half days of pavement maintenance. The runway was closed starting at 7:00 a.m. on Monday, July 20, under a published notice to air missions (NOTAM).
Work completed
- Crack sealing. Crews cleaned and sealed 13,900 linear feet of pavement cracks on the runway, taxiway and apron.
- Markings. Runway numbers, centerline stripes, threshold bars and hold lines were repainted.
- Windsocks. Both of the airport’s windsocks were replaced with new 12-foot fabric socks on rebuilt frames. The north windsock is lighted for night operations.

About the windsocks
Over the spring, pilots reported that the airport’s two windsocks often showed different wind directions. Airport Manager Ron Hooten traced the problem to a seized bearing on the south windsock frame. That windsock had been pointing southeast since at least March, regardless of the wind.
Both frames now have new bearings, and both socks were replaced because the north sock had faded to a color the manufacturer could not identify.
“Both windsocks now agree with each other, and with the weather,” Hooten said. “That’s what you want in a windsock.”
Coming up
The airport will host its Fly-In & Windsock Appreciation Day on Saturday, November 7, with aircraft displays, introductory flights for young people and a short ceremony recognizing the new windsocks.
Dongvile Municipal Airport is an unattended field with self-serve fuel. Pilots should check current NOTAMs before every flight.
